Partying in Palermo

Driving the point home here, but Quattro Canti was an excellent place to meet people, The owners, Giuseppe and Veronica were always planning hostel get togethers to bring everyone together and welcome in newcomers.  At 8PM every night you could walk into the common area and expect Giuseppe and Veronica to be planning either and dinner, or drinks, or a night out.  My first night he set me up with a group of Canadian and English, and one NYC traveler for a fantastic seafood dinner, followed by drinks.  They were such a fun crew, but unfortunately half of them were leaving the very next day.  Not to worry though, because the same thing happened the next night, except I was the veteran instead of the newcomer, and Giuseppe took us out to a local outdoor bar area not far from the hostel, where we drank 1.50€ 40s.  We tended to go back to that place pretty often.  Since I was staying at the hostel for a week I ended up seeing about 3 groups of traveler come and go.  Towards the end of my stay our group was quite the mixture, but we melded really well together.  There were 2 girls from Australia, both of whom had been living in the UK, a guy from Spain and another from Argentina who were both now living in Ireland, 2 brothers from Brazil, one of which was living in France, another set of brothers from the UK and another solo traveler from the UK.  Strange coincidence though, randomly over dinner I discovered that the guy from Spain happened to work for Greater Than One Spain (a 5 person operation) at the same time I worked for Greater Than One NYC (a 50 person operation).  Really small world!

One night, with this last group, I went to this rave in the middle of the city.  It was in the awesome outdoor market space with these old, derelict buildings all around.  It was an amazing night, really fun, drinking, dancing and dodging too-friendly locals all night.  That is, until one of the girls had the wallet stolen out of her purse.  I was really pissed at myself, because I know who did it.  I actually caught the guy with his hand in my purse earlier, the only thing saving me was that the zipper of my bag was broken and so he had to tug on it to get it open and I felt it.  I turned on him and snatched my purse away.  Then I watched him closely for a while but eventually forgot.  When I noticed he was getting a little too close to some of my new friends I warned the girl to watch her purse.  She immediately checked her bag and discovered that her wallet was gone.  And surprise surprise, the guy and his slimy friends had hightailed it to the other side of the dance floor.  I pointed him out and to my surprise she went and confronted the guy, but at that point he didn't have the wallet on him.  Brave girl, much braver then me who did absolutely nothing.  If I had just caused a scene earlier then he wouldn't have had the chance to snatch her wallet.  I'm still kicking myself over it. Grrr.  She was such a trooper about it though and didn't let it spoil her night.

LI don't think this make Palermo a bad or dangerous place,as this kind of thing could happen anywhere.  I would definitely go back again, especially if I was surrounded again by such fantastic people.  And if I ever saw that guy again I think I would give him a nice, swift kick in the balls....asshole.
