One of my final days in Bangkok I venture to China town with my friends Fu and Christina. Fu is a Chinese teacher at my school and she knows all the good spots to eat delicious, legit Chinese food. We go to the same hole in the wall place off the main drag in Chinatown where we had eaten before. I loved my rice dish last time, but this time I wanted to try something different. Well, I got what I asked for....this is how it all went down.
Fu: Try the black chicken soup
Me: ...but why is it black?
Fu: because the chicken is black...you never see black chicken
Me: I've seen a black chicken I'm just making sure its nothing like that black egg business
Fu: ...it is good....it is medicine in China.
Me: Everything seems to be medicine in your country Fu, but if you say so I'll try it. I will try anything once.
So, I try the soup and she is right, it's good. I have to peel the chicken off the bone but it tastes like chicken so all is right with the world. Then, on the next spoonful this comes up (see picture)....claws and all! I'm still not completely turned off of it. It's not the first time I've found a chicken foot in my food since arriving in Thailand, though the claws are new. So, I start eating around it.
Me: So, Fu what medicinal properties does black chicken soup have? Why do people in China eat it?
Fu: Women eat it for...how you say...fertility purposes.
Me: Fu! You couldn't tell me that before I ate half the bowl...what are you trying to get my ego prego!
Me: Well I'm sure my mom would thank you, but I think I'm done.
