Future Novelist Write Here!

For those who may not know it, part of the reason for coming on this journey, and for spending so much time in Italy specifically, is because I am in the midst of writing my first novel.  It has been a dream of mine, floating in the back of my mind while I toiled away with other distractions and life goals, that I am hoping to bring to fruition.  I started researching and writing nearly 4 years ago, but trying to jump start a career in a city like New York, is not exactly conducive to great literary prowess.  So, I did what I could, when I could find the time, until I hit a wall.  My book will be a work of historical fiction, my favorite genre, and is about the city of Pompeii and the fateful eruption that destroyed it. I have always been a total nerd for history and specifically  Roman and Pompeiian history, so a work of historical fiction seemed to just fit.  So, as I said, I started writing and hit a bit of a snag as I was trying desperately to bring my characters and their surroundings to life when I realized, no research in the world could supplement actually walking the streets of Pompeii and putting myself at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius.  Even before I planned my trip around the world, this visit to Italy, and more specifically Pompeii, was in the works.  Actually, I had originally planned to stay longer in Italy all together, to possibly finish the book here, but that was not meant to be.

Every step I take in this country has been a great help in bringing me closer to finishing my book.  In Rome and Naples, through the ruins and churches and streets and people, I have found inspiration to pick up the pen once again.  But my next step onto the streets of Pompeii is without doubt the most important of all.

I have planned to stay in Pompei (the new city) for 2 days for research purposes.  I will be visiting the ruins of Pompeii during this time.  From there I am renting a room in Salerno, a city on the Amalfi Coast about 30 minutes from Pompeii by train or bus, for 2 weeks where I will write, returning to the site as needed.
