Right from the start this plan got muddled up when I ended up on a direct train into Naples. Not the biggest deal, I could still take the Circumvesuviana from there, it would just take me twice as long. The next problem was that I didn't realize there was more then one stop in Sorrento, so I ended up getting off at least 2 stops early and walking around blindly, trying to find the port or the town center or anything really to give me a clue about where the hell I was. At this point it was getting towards 3:30, so I gave up on any hopes of making it to Capri. Instead, I resolved myself to enjoying the rest of my day in Sorrento, if that was in fact where I was.
I had been wandering for nearly an hour and was just starting to feel like I was at least heading in the right direction when a guy pulled up on his Vespa scooter, just like in the movies, though he was not nearly as tall or attractive as a leading man. He guessed at where I was from and my age, strange but dead on, and asked me if I would let him show me the sights around Sorrento. I hesitated for only a moment before I said, "yes, why not!" I had no idea where I was going anyway and I needed a bit of an adventure on this so far craptastic birthday, so I grasped the spare helmet he offered and in no time we were off! He drove me through the center of town and showed me where the train station was and told me he would drop me there later (I had still been very far off and was happy I had accepted the ride). Then he took me to a lookout point where, surprise surprise, he tried to kiss me. Damn, had it even been 5 minutes! These Italian boys move fast. I told him I was not interested and he respectfully backed off, though was very clear that although we had not known each other long he felt a strong attraction towards me. Oh boy, here we go again! The last stop we made was outside of town along the Amalfi coast line with really beautiful views. Next he invited me to join him for caffe, but it was near 6:00 and I decided it was time to head back. When he dropped me off at the train station he apologized for being forward with the kiss which was nice of him, but then when we said goodbye and I assumed he was going for the normal double cheek kiss, he caught me off guard and planted one right on my lips. Sly S-O-B! I couldn't help but laugh though.
When I finally got back to the apartment about 2 hours later I was just in time to join my roommates for another delicious Italian dinner. Then we went out for some beers with a group of their friends and Massimo's girlfriend bought me a rose. Very sweet!
So while turning 30 in Italy was not exactly how I imagined it would be, and there was much more time spent on trains then I would have liked, I really can't complain too much. At the end of the day I got a personal tour of Sorrento on the back of a Vespa scooter (so Italian!) and I got to spend the evening eating a delicious Italian meal and drinking beers with new friends.
